Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng has emphasized the importance of enhancing Vietnam’s strategic partnership with Laos, underscoring the need for stronger economic ties and improved infrastructure connectivity between the two nations. This reaffirmation came during a meeting in Hanoi with Vilay Lakhamfong, a senior official of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, where both parties discussed the future of bilateral relations and the implementation of existing agreements.

Hưng highlighted that the cooperation between Vietnam and Laos has become increasingly substantive and effective. He urged for the transformation of high-level commitments into practical projects that deliver tangible benefits to the citizens of both countries. The Vietnamese prime minister also expressed support for Laos’ national development endeavors, identifying opportunities for expanded collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, defense, security, education, science, technology, and tourism.

The discussion included a focus on accelerating major infrastructure projects like the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway and the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway, as well as initiatives related to energy connectivity. The leaders also talked about advancing the proposed Laos–Vietnam Friendship University, which is seen as a significant step in strengthening educational and cultural ties.

Both sides committed to the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement for 2026–2030. They stressed the significance of regular high-level exchanges and closer coordination among ministries, local authorities, and businesses to ensure the effective realization of these strategies.

In preparation for 2027, which marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, both countries are planning activities to celebrate their historic ties. These activities, part of the Vietnam–Laos Year of Friendship and Strategic Cohesion 2027, aim to foster a deeper connection among the younger generations in both countries.

Vilay Lakhamfong expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s support in Laos’ development and reiterated his country’s commitment to maintaining the strong bilateral relationship. He emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration on regional security, stability, and economic development. Both leaders expressed confidence that their strengthened cooperation would enhance political trust, support shared development objectives, and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
