At a significant mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, Vietnam and Laos have taken stock of their ongoing 2026 cooperation plan, committing to enhance their partnership across several sectors including investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. This gathering allowed officials from both nations to evaluate the advancements achieved during the initial eight months of the year and to set clear priorities for the duration of 2026.
Vietnam’s economic engagement with Laos has shown considerable growth, as Vietnamese enterprises launched 20 new investment projects in Laos, collectively valued at $638.3 million within the first seven months of 2026. Laos continues to be Vietnam’s most significant overseas investment partner, hosting approximately 300 projects backed by Vietnamese investors, cumulatively worth over $7 billion. The bilateral trade volume between the two countries reached an estimated $1.3 billion during the first half of the year, indicating a robust economic exchange.
The two nations are also making strides in cooperation concerning energy, transport, and infrastructure connectivity. These areas are seen as vital components for enhancing regional integration. Notably, Vietnam has committed to providing 1,300 scholarships to Lao students in 2026, underlining education and human resource development as essential pillars of their cooperation. Additionally, Vietnam has allocated $43 million in aid to Laos for the current year, forming part of a broader assistance programme scheduled to run through 2030.
To further consolidate their relations, Vietnam and Laos have agreed to improve their coordination on major projects, addressing investment challenges and fortifying economic ties not only between themselves but also across the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. The agreements and initiatives from this meeting reflect a mutual interest in fostering a closer partnership that supports economic growth and development in both countries.
