During Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam’s state visit to Denmark from October 19 to 21, 2026, Vietnam and Denmark announced an upgrade in their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This development marks a significant enhancement in cooperation efforts between the two nations, coinciding with the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
The new partnership aims to strengthen collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, defense, security, and sustainable development. It builds upon the existing Comprehensive Partnership established in 2013 and the Green Strategic Partnership launched in 2023. The two countries have committed to expanding political dialogue, parliamentary exchanges, and economic cooperation with a particular focus on renewable energy, green technology, and digital transformation.
Both Vietnam and Denmark are set to promote business investment, enhance supply chains, and improve market access through existing trade agreements. Additionally, their cooperation will deepen in areas such as climate action, energy efficiency, and the development of renewable energy projects, supporting Vietnam’s aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The agreement also extends to various other sectors, including maritime security, cybersecurity, research, vocational training, agriculture, and public health. Both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to adhering to international law, fostering multilateral cooperation, and supporting the peaceful resolution of disputes. They have also expressed their backing for regional stability and freedom of navigation, alongside stronger cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
To translate their commitments into actionable measures, both governments plan to develop detailed action plans. These plans will guide the practical implementation of the partnership, ensuring that the envisioned collaboration materializes effectively across all targeted sectors.
