On September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng hosted Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Hà Nội, marking the latter’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in his current capacity. The meeting served as a platform for both nations to commit to fortifying their bilateral relations and broadening cooperation across a variety of sectors. Prime Minister Hưng reaffirmed Vietnam’s backing of Myanmar’s endeavors toward achieving stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic progress.
President Min Aung Hlaing commended Vietnam for its socio-economic accomplishments and increasing influence on the regional and international stage. He expressed a keen interest in learning from Vietnam’s developmental strides and reaffirmed Myanmar’s dedication to sustaining the longstanding friendship and extensive cooperation with Vietnam. Both leaders acknowledged the recent advancements in their bilateral ties and agreed on the importance of boosting high-level exchanges to enhance political trust. They emphasized the need to revive pivotal cooperation frameworks in trade, security, and defense.
A significant focus of the discussions was defense and security collaboration, poised to become a cornerstone of their relationship. The two countries aim to bolster efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Plans are also in place to enhance military training programs, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and collaborate on non-traditional security challenges.
Economic cooperation was another critical area of discussion, with both sides eager to explore avenues for increasing trade and revising existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar showed a particular interest in inviting Vietnamese investments in various sectors, including telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure development. Additionally, the leaders talked about improving infrastructure and air connectivity, restoring direct flights, and developing joint tourism initiatives that encompass spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam pledged to continue collaborating with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar, supporting peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law. Prime Minister Hưng extended an invitation to President Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội scheduled for November 2026. In return, President Min Aung Hlaing invited Prime Minister Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually agreed-upon time.
