In a recent meeting between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and Andrew Barr, the Chief Minister of Australia’s Australian Capital Territory (ACT), both parties committed to enhancing cooperation between Việt Nam’s major cities, Hà Nội and Ho Chi Minh City, and Canberra. Ambassador Tâm anticipates that Barr’s forthcoming visit to Việt Nam will pave the way for new collaborations. He pointed out the promising avenues for joint efforts in sectors such as renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development, which could benefit both regions.
The ambassador further suggested the establishment of a friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT. This agreement is intended to foster long-term partnerships across various sectors, ensuring sustained engagement and mutual benefits. Barr, preparing for his initial visit to Việt Nam, acknowledged the nation as a pivotal economic partner for the ACT within its broader international engagement strategy.
During their discussions, Barr expressed openness to the idea of forming a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội. He highlighted the potential for collaborative efforts in green transition initiatives, electric transportation, and renewable energy projects. These initiatives align with the shared goal of achieving net-zero emissions by the year 2050, offering a solid foundation for future joint ventures.
Barr also conveyed his interest in participating in public diplomacy activities during upcoming visits to Australia by senior Vietnamese officials. His willingness to engage in such activities underscores the ACT’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Việt Nam.
