As Vietnam and Norway prepare to mark 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in key sectors such as trade, renewable energy, and maritime development. This pledge was solidified during a recent meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål. The discussions focused on enhancing economic ties and expanding political dialogue between the two countries.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the progress on a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. After 14 years of negotiations, both parties are eager to complete the ratification procedures and move towards implementation. The agreement is anticipated to improve market access, foster business partnerships, and provide greater certainty for investors, thus boosting economic opportunities for both nations.
The Green Strategic Partnership, signed in April, was another focal point of discussion. This partnership aims to support sustainable development and facilitate the transition to cleaner energy sources. Vietnam has encouraged Norwegian businesses and financial institutions to invest more in areas such as renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture.
Norway, in turn, has expressed interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy. Both countries are keen on sharing technology and expertise to advance carbon neutrality and enhance energy security. These efforts underscore their commitment to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.
Regional cooperation was also highlighted, with Vietnam and Norway agreeing to work closely within the ASEAN-Norway partnership for the 2026–2030 period. This collaboration will focus on areas like the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development. Both nations have pledged to strengthen coordination between their foreign ministries and support each other in regional and international forums, including the United Nations.
The discussions reflect the shared vision of Vietnam and Norway to expand economic opportunities, deepen diplomatic relations, and advance sustainable development goals. By reinforcing their partnership, both countries aim to contribute positively to regional stability and global economic growth.
