In an effort to tackle workforce shortages and bolster economic development, Greece is actively pursuing stronger labor ties with Vietnam and other ASEAN nations, according to Athanasios Plevris, the Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum. During a recent meeting in Athens with representatives from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, Plevris shared insights into Greece’s strategy for addressing these challenges.
Plevris underscored the importance of establishing early bilateral labor agreements, which he believes will protect the interests of both workers and employers, while also aiding Greece’s initiatives to curb irregular migration. He highlighted the increasing significance of migration management, particularly in light of the European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum.
Ambassador Phạm Thị Thu Hương of Vietnam expressed optimism about the ongoing discussions with Greece, citing progress since previous dialogues with the Greek minister. She conveyed hope that a bilateral labor agreement could soon be finalized, emphasizing that such a pact would not only enhance employment prospects for Vietnamese workers but also strengthen the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
The Greek minister responded positively to the ambassador’s proposals, instructing relevant authorities to push forward with negotiations involving Vietnam and other ASEAN members. The goal is to expedite the establishment of labor cooperation agreements that can benefit all parties involved.
Currently, approximately 1,700 Vietnamese nationals are holding valid residence permits in Greece, according to data from Greece’s Ministry of Migration and Asylum. This statistic underscores the existing presence of Vietnamese workers in the country and the potential for expanding this workforce through formalized labor agreements.
