In a significant diplomatic development, Thailand’s Anutin Charnvirakul and France’s Emmanuel Macron have decided to elevate their nations’ bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. This decision emerged from their official discussions held in Paris at the Élysée Palace. The talks were centered around enhancing collaboration in key sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defence, and advanced technology. Additionally, the leaders examined regional issues, particularly those involving Cambodia and Myanmar, to align their strategic interests.
The dialogue between Thailand and France resulted in agreements to bolster cooperation in emerging industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for finalizing the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement within the year. This trade agreement, initially launched in 2013, faced suspension in 2014 but was revitalized in 2023. Thai officials anticipate that the agreement will unlock significant economic opportunities for both nations.
Defence and cybersecurity were also key areas of focus during the talks. Both countries pledged to intensify efforts to counter cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats, reflecting a shared commitment to enhance security measures. On regional matters, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to addressing border issues with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international legal frameworks, underscoring its commitment to regional stability.
Thailand and France have also outlined plans to implement a new Joint Action Plan aimed at strengthening their partnership from 2026 to 2028. This initiative is expected to lay the groundwork for a formal strategic partnership, marking a new phase in their bilateral relations. During his visit, Anutin engaged with executives from prominent French companies, including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, to attract further investments into Thailand’s high-tech and future industries.
French businesses expressed confidence in the Thai investment climate, with Airbus announcing intentions to expand its aviation and engineering operations in the country. This engagement reflects a mutual interest in fostering robust economic ties and underscores the growing significance of Thailand-France relations amidst evolving global dynamics.
