Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional ties as they prepare to lead the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in consecutive years, with Singapore taking the chairmanship in 2027 followed by Thailand in 2028. This decision follows the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2, marking the first meeting of its kind between Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Notably, this was the first bilateral retreat between the two nations in over a decade, highlighting an opportunity to strengthen their already robust relationship by setting a multi-year agenda to ensure smooth transitions and continuity for their forthcoming ASEAN leadership roles.

The discussions in Bangkok resulted in an agreement to broaden cooperation across various sectors, including artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, defense and security, and the fight against transnational crime. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to a rules-based international order and the necessity of deeper ASEAN regional integration. A significant focus was placed on energy cooperation, with both nations supporting initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This project enables Singapore to import renewable hydropower from Laos, facilitated through Thailand and Malaysia.

Additionally, the retreat witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing social sector development. This agreement will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and research related to social welfare policies and foster collaboration among pertinent institutions in both countries. This step signifies a commitment to not only economic but also social collaboration, enhancing the overall well-being and development of their societies.

Economic relations between Singapore and Thailand remain significant, underscored by bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has consistently been Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three years in a row, illustrating the depth of economic engagement between the two nations. This robust economic partnership provides a solid foundation for the expanded cooperation and integration initiatives discussed during the leaders’ retreat. As Singapore and Thailand gear up for their respective ASEAN chairmanships, the enhanced collaboration across various sectors is poised to reinforce their leadership roles and contribute to strengthening the ASEAN community as a whole.
