Việt Nam and Japan have announced plans to enhance their defence collaboration in several key areas, including military training, cybersecurity, and the development of the defence industry. The two nations also aim to work together on United Nations peacekeeping operations and efforts related to post-war recovery. This commitment was solidified during a meeting in Hà Nội between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces.
In their discussions, General Giang underscored Việt Nam’s dedication to improving consultation and dialogue mechanisms and broadening cooperation among the different branches of the military. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. These defence relations are seen as a crucial element of the more extensive Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that exists between the two countries.
General Giang expressed appreciation for Japan’s contributions in various areas, such as personnel training, defence industry development, technology transfer, and initiatives for post-war recovery. He also advocated for increased scholarships and training opportunities for Vietnamese defence personnel, focusing specifically on science, engineering, and technology sectors.
Japan is recognized as one of Việt Nam’s principal economic and strategic partners, with robust cooperation in trade, investment, development assistance, and labour exchanges. The defence partnership has seen significant growth, bolstered by regular policy dialogues and military consultations between the two nations. General Uchikura affirmed Japan’s dedication to advancing defence ties and expressed eagerness to expand cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces.
Both parties agreed to maintain close coordination, aiming to further build mutual trust and reinforce regional stability while fostering long-term strategic cooperation. The ongoing efforts reflect a shared commitment to enhancing the bilateral relationship and addressing common security challenges.
