VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite, has been a pivotal element in enhancing collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. Launched on May 7, 2013, and operational since September of the same year, the satellite has surpassed expectations by remaining functional well into 2026, despite its original five-year lifespan. This program not only marked a milestone in Vietnam’s technological journey but also laid the groundwork for future endeavors in satellite development, technology transfer, and strengthening domestic capabilities.

The initiative led to significant advancements in Vietnam’s technical expertise, particularly with Vietnamese engineers receiving extensive training in France and at home between 2011 and 2013. This training encompassed crucial areas such as system design and satellite operations, enabling engineers to transition from relying on imported procedures to independently solving technical challenges. Furthermore, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing infrastructure that manages imaging requests, satellite control, and data processing. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has delivered approximately 30,000 satellite images, aiding environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and security operations.

According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the satellite program has laid a strong foundation in both technology and human resources, essential for future satellite projects. However, he pointed out that achieving greater technological independence necessitates advancements in satellite design, electronics, flight software, and ground systems, among other areas. The goal is to progress from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, empowering Vietnamese engineers to eventually design and operate future satellite systems independently.

A new chapter of this collaborative effort began in May 2025, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam. During the visit, a declaration of intent was signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies, focusing on long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. This partnership aims to explore the development of a next-generation Earth observation system and the potential creation of VNREDSat-2.

The future cooperation framework emphasizes increasing Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, and data applications. Areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and selected sensors and payloads are identified as key opportunities for Vietnam to cultivate greater domestic expertise. The overarching objective remains to facilitate a transition from purchasing technology to mastering it, ultimately enabling Vietnam to independently develop its future satellite technology.
