ChatGPT users on Mac face a significant change. The voice conversation capability in the macOS desktop app will be removed starting January 15, 2026. OpenAI announced this through official channels, framing it as necessary for developing more cohesive voice experiences across platforms.
The removal is specific to the Mac desktop application. Voice features remain fully operational through the ChatGPT website, which works on any browser, as well as through iOS and Android mobile apps. Windows desktop users also maintain their voice access. Mac is the only desktop platform losing this capability.
While OpenAI hasn’t provided extensive technical details, the company’s statement suggests architectural differences. The current Mac app’s voice implementation may not fit with broader voice technology plans. As voice interaction grows more important in AI services, especially with emerging hardware and integration opportunities, standardization becomes crucial.
Users relying on voice features will need to adapt. People using voice for accessibility reasons, professionals with hands-free workflows, or individuals who prefer speaking to typing will all face disruptions. Switching to web-based or mobile voice access provides alternatives but may not replicate the desktop app experience.
Industry observers largely believe this is temporary. OpenAI’s continued emphasis on voice technology in other products suggests Mac users will eventually see voice return in an improved form. The current removal likely enables backend improvements that the existing Mac app architecture cannot support.
